If you want to be an artist you have to be able to draw. In this art tutorial, aimed at beginners and students of art, I explain what drawing is. Drawing is a language, like any other language because it is a means of communication. Drawing has an ‘alphabet’ of marks, textures, tones, shapes etc. This gives images their meaning and therefore their means to communicate.
Learning to draw means learning to see with a critical eye. Drawing is not about what you think you see, or what some one else tells you to see. It is about your vision, your ideas. Drawing is about observation. Observational drawing trains the eye to see, and to compare and contrast what is in front of you. Being good at drawing is not about the ability to copy someone else’s work. Becoming an artist is all about your ideas, your vision, because that is what makes you unique. Striving for your unique vision is one element to becoming an artist.
